This article lists the various background character deaths that occur in Danny Boyle's 2025 horror film 28 Years Later.
- The film opens with a prologue set in a village in the Scottish Highlands, during the original Rage Virus outbreak in 2002. A young boy, Jimmy Crystal, is sitting in a room along with six of the village's children where they are watching Teletubbies on video.
- After putting another young girl in the room, Jimmy's aunt warns the children to stay where they are before leaving. Seconds later, some loud banging sounds can be heard from beyond the door, visibly frightening the children. Wondering what is going on, Jimmy goes to the door and puts his ear against it. Suddenly, the door is forced open by a mob of Infected, who proceed to attack and slaughter the other children. The only details shown on-screen indicating the children's demise is a shot of the television set being spattered with blood. Jimmy was pushed against the wall when the door opened, so the Infected do not notice him and he manages to escape while they are busy attacking the girls.
- Running downstairs, Jimmy finds his mother in the kitchen. She closes the kitchen door and tells Jimmy to run. At that moment, an Infected appears behind Jimmy's mother, biting her as she continues screaming for Jimmy to get away. Seconds later, the door glass breaks and Jimmy's mother falls through it, screaming at Jimmy to run one last time before she succumbs to the Rage Virus.
- Jimmy looks over on the landing and sees his aunt on her knees and vomiting blood, indicating that she is infected. He turns around to see one of the girls from the living room being thrown against the wall.
- Jimmy runs to the local church where his father - the minister - is knelt in prayer. The minister tells Jimmy that Judgement Day is upon them and gives his son the golden cross from around his neck before hiding him in a crawlspace below a metal grate by the altar. A group of Infected then enter the church by smashing through the stained-glass windows and the minister outstretches his arms as he allows himself to be taken. In seconds, the minister is infected and leads the others out of the church to hunt down more victims.
- In 2030, Spike is taken by his father Jamie to practice hunting on the mainland for the first time. The leadership committee for Lindisfarne come to the gate to see them off and Jenny warns Spike how the community learned the hard way that they cannot afford to send rescue parties if anything goes wrong, indicating a series of graves nearby.
- As Jamie and Spike enter the forest beyond the causeway, somewhere in the wilderness a pack of Infected are feasting on a deer.
- Jamie and Spike encounter a "Slow-Low", an Infected variant with a large, bloated body that prevents it from running, meaning it can only crawl around on its belly. On his father's instruction, Spike raises his bow and launches an arrow into the Slow-Low's neck, killing it in a burst of arterial spray. The creature lets out a shrill, high-pitched scream as it dies.
- Three other Slow-Lows are nearby as Spike makes his first kill. Jamie turns as one approaches and stands up, loosing an arrow into its chest. He turns to a younger-looking one that starts to waddle his way, firing an arrow through its head. The third Slow-Low, a child like the second, turns and runs away, another indicator that the Infected have developed greater self-preservation instincts since the outbreak.
- When Jamie and Spike investigate a long-abandoned farmhouse, they come across a disturbing sight: an Infected that has been strung up by its ankles, a plastic bag over its head and the name "JIMMY" carved into the skin on its chest. At first, the Infected appears dead as it hangs still while a crow feeds upon its flesh. However, the creature suddenly begins writhing about and grunting ferociously as Spike gets close to it. Jamie urges Spike to kill it, but the boy hesitates. As the Infected thrashes about, the rope suspending it suddenly gives and it drops to the floor. Just as the creature gets to its feet, Spike looses an arrow into its head and puts it down.
- Walking through the forest once more, Spike and Jamie find a deer that has been viciously torn apart by Infected. The animal's head is missing, but Spike finds the head pinned to a tree by the antler. Jamie warns Spike that an Alpha Infected was responsible for this grotesque display.
- Jamie and Spike emerge from the forest only to find a pack of Infected amassed by a tree upon the hill. At the sound of their Alpha's roar, the pack run down the hill towards their prey.
- As the Infected draw closer, Jamie and Spike turn to make a defensive stance. Jamie fires an arrow and kills the lead Infected, but Spike misses when he shoots. Jamie fires off another arrow to kill the Infected that Spike missed before the two start running again.
- Jamie and Spike stop once more to shoot their pursuers. Jamie shoots an arrow into the head of an Infected, but Spike cannot keep his arm steady and misfires, hitting his target in the leg. Jamie finishes off the limping Infected with a shot to the heart.
- Jamie and Spike run back to the farmhouse they had visited earlier. An Infected enters after them, but Jamie shoots an arrow through its head.
- While Jamie tries to help Spike climb up into the house's attic, an Infected comes up the stairs. Unable to help Spike up and fight, Jamie reaches for his bow again, using his last arrow to kill his attacker. The two make it into the attic, but a pair of Infected are prowling around below them, screeching.
- After being forced to vacate the collapsing farmhouse, Jamie and Spike head back to the causeway. The water is shallow so they can still cross, but the Alpha they encountered before chases after them. As the pair near the gate, the guards on the watch towers fire a hail of arrows upon the Alpha, though this only slows it down. When the Alpha is upon them, a long, flaming spear is fired from a ballista, piercing the Alpha's torso and killing it.
- After Spike asks about Dr. Ian Kelson and the fire they had seen the day before, Jamies tells his son about how fifteen years ago, he and a group of foragers had encountered Kelson. He says they had seen him standing among hundreds of corpses that he had gathered and was preparing to burn, and had waved over to the foragers as a friendly greeting. Jamie and the others considered Kelson insane and fled, never going back since.
- After Spike and his mother Isla go to the mainland, they take shelter in a ruined castle during the night. After dark, a Slow-Low crawls into the tomb where Spike and Isla are sleeping. The creature crawls up to Spike, ready to feed on him, when suddenly Isla awakes and pulls a cloth down over the Slow-Low's head before beating it against a stone carving and killing it.
- In Northumberland, Erik Sundqvist and his team of NATO soldiers have arrived at a large concrete structure as a mob of Infected pursue them.
- One of the soldiers turns toward the Infected horde and opens fire with his M-16, killing three of them.
- Another Infected is killed when a soldier turns to fire at the pursuing mob.
- A soldier carrying a wounded comrade is knocked to the ground by an Infected that jumps down from a high concrete wall. The Infected bites both soldiers before being shot dead by another.
- Just as the two Infected soldiers succumb to the virus, they are both executed by their comrade. That soldier is then tackled to the ground by another Infected.
- Two more Infected are gunned down by the surviving soldiers.
- Erik and the remaining two Swedish soldiers enter the structure and close the metal gate behind them. An Infected slams into the gate and is promptly shot dead.
- As the three soldiers make their way through the darkened concrete tunnel, they are attacked by the Alpha Infected that Dr. Kelson refers to as "Samson". Samson grabs one of the soldiers and uses his awesome brute strength to rip the man's head off along with his spinal cord. As Erik runs away in terror, Samson bludgeons the other remaining soldier to death with the head of his comrade.
- Running back to the gate, Erik shoots the two Infected on the other side before opening the gate and fleeing.
- Spike and Isla stop in the middle of a field of flowers where Isla spots the Angel of the North statue off in the distance. As Isla admires the statue, a frail, withered Infected (pictured above) rises up from the tall grass. Due to its emaciated state, the Infected can only stagger slowly towards Isla. Spike readies his bow and looses an arrow, killing the Infected, which lets out a raspy shriek as it dies, attracting six more able-bodied Infected.
- As Spike and Isla approach a dilapidated petrol station and restaurant, Spike turns and shoots one of the pursuing Infected.
- Spike and Isla enter the abandoned restaurant, but it is flooded with benzene gas. The Infected follow them inside and Spike struggles to fight them off, but their salvation arrives in the form of Erik, who is on the roof. Erik opens a skylight and warns Spike and Isla to get down on the floor before he shoots a burst of fire inside, igniting the gas and setting the Infected ablaze. Having ducked under the risen gas, Spike and Isla survive and escape with Erik as the Infected die burning and screaming.
- Isla boards a derelict train where she encounters a pregnant Infected. The Infected woman is in the throes of labour pain, so she does not attack. When Spike and Erik follow, they watch as Isla delivers the Infected's child. Shortly after giving birth, however, the Infected becomes feral again, but is gunned down by Erik before she can harm anyone.
- After being rescued by Dr. Kelson, Spike and Isla follow him back to his home: a temple made from the bones of the dead that he had been tending to for the last fifteen years.
- Twenty-eight days after his mother's passing, Spike has left the baby back at Lindisfarne while he explores the mainland by himself.
- While Spike is cooking a fish on the roadside, an Infected appears on the road and runs toward him. Spike gets up, readies his bow and expertly shoots the Infected in the heart.
- Two more Infected appear, with one chasing after Spike while the other goes for the fish cooking over the fire. After coming to a dead end where the road is blocked by a heap of rocks, Spike turns and shoots the incoming Infected.
- As more Infected approach Spike's position, the now-adult Jimmy Crystal appears along with a group of other people who all wear similar clothing and similar hair. As the Infected close in, Jimmy's group leap down from the rocks and attack them.
- One of Jimmy's cultists throws a plastic tarp over one Infected's head while two others strike the legs to bring it to its knees. They then kill the Infected by bashing its head in.
- The cultist in a blue jumpsuit kicks against a rock wall and jumps up and over a female Infected. He then draws a spear and impales her through the back.
- The cultist in the red jumpsuit uses a blade to slash an Infected's belly.
- The cultist in green drives a wooden spike through an Infected's back and out of her chest.
- A younger Infected charges at Spike, but two of the cultists hold it back with a pole that splits into two clubs linked by a chain. The chain goes in front of the Infected's neck and the cultists proceed to use the chain to saw the creature's head off.
- The final Infected is not killed outright, but is strung up with rope and left hanging upside down, appearing strangely docile while suspended.
