Al Apone was a supporting character in the 1986 science-fiction horror film Aliens. He served as the Master Sergeant of the Colonial Marine Corps unit assigned to investigate the loss of contact with Hadley's Hope on LV-426. Apone was very passionate about his service to the Corps and, while he could sometimes be harsh towards the Marines under his command, he was very much respected by them. He was portrayed by Al Matthews.
History[]
Sgt. Apone was selected for the mission to Hadley's Hope due to his expertise in on-the-ground logistics and exemplary leadership abilities. He was second in command of the detachment, under Lieutenant Gorman.
During the initial stages of the operation to LV-426, Apone assumed nominal command of First Squad, superseding Private Hudson. Apone was one of the few Marines that Ellen Ripley became sociable with prior to the mission, joking with him over the relocation of cargo on board the USS Sulaco; Apone, in turn, appreciated her efforts to help despite not being a Marine.
When the Sulaco reached LV-426, Apone readied his men for the drop in typically boisterous fashion before taking his place on board the unit's APC for the drop to the planet's surface. After breaking up Hudson's attempts to embarrass Ripley, Apone led his men into the colony complex. Despite finding evidence of a firefight, the colony was deserted save for Newt, and Apone insisted they had missed the fight.
The Marines soon moved into the colony's atmospheric processing center which they found had been converted into a Xenomorph hive. Gorman warned Apone that fire from the Marines' pulse rifles could trigger a catastrophic explosion, so Apone ordered the others to surrender their ammunition and use Incinerators only. As Ripley had warned, the colonists had been moved there where they had all been implanted with embryos. One colonist was found still alive, but she then died in front of the Marines when the Chestburster inside her tore its way out of her body. Private Vasquez torched the infant alien, but its death-shrieks alerted the rest of the hive.
Fate[]
As Xenomorph drones surrounded the Marines, the situation rapidly deteriorated into chaos as the aliens began grabbing the soldiers one by one. Gorman attempted to issue orders over the comms, but his transmission became scrambled and his commands went unheard. As Sgt. Apone struggled valiantly to fend off the advancing aliens, he was grabbed by one and dragged away.
Apone is never seen again after being captured, but there are only two likely possibilities of what happened afterwards. He either got impregnated with a Xenomorph embryo and died when the larva tore its way out of him, or if he survived before that occurred, he would have died when the colony was destroyed following the processing station's self-destruct.
