Biography[]
During the time he spends with Ed under his roof, Alfons is amused by Ed's stories about his own world and the power of alchemy. As much as he enjoys Ed's stories, he does not believe they are true and is hurt by Ed's eagerness to find a way to leave this world, which he seems to believe is all but a waking dream.
Over the course of the film, Alfons seeks financial backing for his rocket technology, eventually being contracted to build rockets for the Thule Society. Alfons, who is afflicted with lung cancer, only wishes to build his rockets in order to leave behind a legacy, something to prove he had lived. He does not agree with the racist worldview of the Thule Society or the Nazi Party. Heiderich neither knows nor believes that Thule is planning to use his research projects to invade and plunder Ed's world - leading to an intense confrontation where he reveals his sickness - until he sees it for himself.
Death[]
As Dietlinde Eckhart is about to launch an invasion of Amestris, Alfons finds Edward inside the hangar he's working in. Ed had just been shot in the prosthetic arm by Eckhart, and Alfons decides to make amends for helping her by getting Edward home. He loads Ed into a rocket, despite Ed's protests, and launches it through the portal. As Alfons watches Ed vanish through the portal, he is shot in back and killed by Rudolf Hess.
