Bane is a minor antagonist in the 1997 film Batman & Robin. This version of Bane (portrayed by Jeep Swenson) is radically different from the comic book original in that it depicts him as an archetypal thug that is all muscles and no brains. This portrayal of Bane possesses none of the character's intellect or even his original comic history; he was a petty thug who was used as a guinea pig in an experiment to produce an army of superhuman soldiers, but the Venom drug used to enhance his body all but destroyed his mind, turning him into a monster.
Death[]
Bane became the minion and bodyguard of the villainess Poison Ivy, assisting her and Mr. Freeze in their plans to take over Gotham City. Near the end of the film, as Batman goes to confront Mr. Freeze in his observatory lair, Bane encountered Robin and Batgirl in a cave within the cliffs on which the observatory was built, and pinned them both against a wall and attempted to strangle them to death. Robin and Batgirl kicked Bane's main supply tube, detaching it from the back of his head and stopping the Venom circulation to his brain in the process. This in turn caused Bane massive withdrawal, also quickly reverting him back to his normal self. He was left behind by Robin and Batgirl as they escaped, but what happened to him afterwards is ultimately left ambiguous, as there is no evidence that he died in the fall of the Telescope Platform that occurred shortly afterwards. However, what appears to be the pool of Venom around him is seen around part of the fallen telescope, hinting that he may have been crushed to death.
