Bernadette Walsh was a supporting character in the 1992 horror film Candyman. She was a student at the University of Illinois and was a close friend of Helen Lyle. She was portrayed by Kasi Lemmons.
Biography[]
Bernadette, along with Helen, was a student at the University of Illinois writing a thesis on urban legends. She and Helen were investigating the legend of the Candyman, a spectral, supernatural killer that bore a hook in place of his right hand. Together, they investigated the apartment block of Cabrini-Green, a crime-ridden area where the locals fervently believed in the legend of the Candyman. Bernadette was hesitant to continue the investigation, but Helen was insistant and would not be deterred.
Death[]
Two days after Helen had aided the police in arresting a gang leader, Bernadette came to visit Helen in her apartment. However, the Candyman had appeared, stirred into action after Helen had convinced the residents of Cabrini-Green that he didn't exist. Cornered and nursing a wound on her shoulder, Helen wept on the floor when Bernadette arrived at her door. Through the intercom, Helen told Bernadette to leave, but Bernadette instead forced the door open. Inside the apartment, she came face-to-face with the Candyman, to took his hook to her and murdered her. The killing isn't shown on-screen, but Helen later wakes up to witness the aftermath, seeing Bernadette's bloodied corpse on the floor and the police suspecting her of committing the murder after her husband Trevor had found her holding a knife (which she had held to defend herself against the Candyman).
