Beru Whitesun Lars (portrayed by Shelagh Fraser) was the wife of Owen Lars and aunt of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Living as moisture farmers on the desert world of Tatooine, she and Owen adopted Luke as their own shortly after his birth, since his mother had died in childbirth and his father Anakin had become a Sith lord (though the Larses were told he was also dead). Though Owen had tried to raise Luke as a true farmer, Beru was more sympathetic of Luke's desire to leave home.
Death[]
In 0 BBY, the Larses purchased two droids - C-3PO and R2-D2 - from a clan of Jawa junk dealers, unaware that the two robots had been misplaced following a battle between Rebel and Imperial forces in orbit above their world. The day after they had bought the droids, their home was attacked by Imperial troops while Luke and Threepio were searching the Jundland Wastes for the runaway Artoo. After meeting Obi-Wan Kenobi and discovering the wreckage of the Jawa sandcrawler his family had bought the droids from, Luke hastily returned home, fearing that his aunt and uncle were in danger.
Unfortunately, it was all over long before he got there. When Luke arrived home, he found smoke billowing out of the house and the charred skeletons of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru lying together in the sand. With his home destroyed and his family gone, Luke decided to join Obi-Wan in travelling to Alderaan and to learn the ways of the Jedi.
