Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 1 Extras

This article details all of the background character deaths that occur in the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

1x01: Welcome to the Hellmouth[]

In the pre-title prologue, an unnamed teenager brings his girlfriend Darla into the halls of Sunnydale High School after dark in order to seduce her. In an unexpected twist, the seemingly innocent Darla turns out to be a vampire. When the boy assures her that there is no one around to catch them, Darla reveals her true nature before feeding on the hapless teen. The boy's corpse is found stuffed in a locker the next day.
As Darla and a male vampire called Thomas (played by J. Patrick Lawlor) are about to feed on Willow, Buffy arrives with Xander in tow. As Buffy banters with Darla, Thomas attempts to attack her. Buffy draws a stake from her blouse and thrusts it into Thomas' heart, who then falls to the floor and turns to dust.

Buffy attacks the trio of vampires who are dragging Xander and Willow through the cemetery. Two of the vampires run away after being attacked, but one is slain when Buffy thrusts a broken tree branch through his heart.
At the Bronze, Luke and several members of the Order of Aurelius arrive and initiate the Harvest, locking the doors and trapping everybody inside. The first victim Luke feeds on is the bouncer, drinking from the man's neck while everyone else watches. The bouncer is drained in seconds and his soul is in turn fed to the Master.
By the time Buffy gets into the club, Luke has fed on another victim, dropping her corpse upon the stage with the first.
Before fighting against Luke, Buffy is attacked by one of his cohorts. Grabbing a cue off the pool table, she thrusts it into the vampire's chest as he lunges at her.
As a vampire grapples with Xander, Buffy grabs a cymbal from the drum set on the stage. She throws it like a frisbee towards Xander's attacker, decapitating him.

The episode begins with Xander saving Buffy from a vampire attack at the Bronze. After Xander punches the vampire out and woos Buffy, the vampire gets up again. Xander breaks the leg off of a wooden chair and hurls the spike into the vampire's chest. It is revealed soon after that this event is actually a dream Xander is having after falling asleep in biology class.
While Buffy and co. are discussing the death of Dr. Gregory in the school library, Giles makes mention of an incident two nights prior in which a homeless man was torn to shreds in Weatherly Park. The man was apparently killed by a vampire armed with a metal claw.
After Xander leaves her class, Miss French makes and consumes a sandwich filled with several live crickets.
As Buffy, Willow and Giles look for the She-Mantis' home, Buffy makes a sojourn into the sewers and finds the clawed vampire, capturing him and using him to sniff out the correct house. After the Scoobies find the house, the vampire frees himself by cutting the ropes binding his hands. He attacks Buffy, but she breaks off a post from a white picket fence and uses it to stake the vampire.

The episode begins with Buffy fighting a vampire in a graveyard. After a few seconds of trading blows, Buffy stakes the vampire. Giles then emerges from behind a stone coffin, criticizing Buffy's technique.
Two of the Master's minions attack a bus on its way from the airport. The driver and all of the passengers are killed, though two are sired: a deranged zealot preaching about Judgement Day and a young boy destined to become the Anointed One who will lead the Slayer to Hell.

Herbert - A small pig that Principal Flutie had purchased to be the mascot for the Sunnydale Razorbacks. While possessed by a pack of hyena spirits, Xander and the group of bullies he was hanging out with broke into the room Herbert was kept in and ate him alive. The gory details weren't shown on-screen.

Zackery - A minion of the Master. At the beginning of the episode, Darla enters the Master's chamber and reports that Zackery had been taken by the Slayer the previous night.
It is fumigation night at the Bronze, so anyone who stomps on a cockroach gets a free drink. Willow smashes a cockroach with a slipper she's wearing on her hand and offers it to Xander.
The Three - A trio of warrior vampires sent by the Master to kill the Slayer. Thanks to the intervention of Angel, Buffy manages to escape from them, returning to her home where vampires cannot enter without invitation. The Three then return to the Master and offer up their own lives in penance. The Master is weary and not in the mood, leaving it to Darla to stake each of the Three.

Cortona, 1418 — In a castle in Italy, Carlo kneels before his master, Moloch. The demon promises Carlo everything if he gives Moloch his love. When Carlo pledges his love, Moloch snaps his neck.

Emily Djiemanowicz - A student at Sunnydale High, portrayed by Krissy Carlson. She was killed by the demon Marc, who removed her heart as part of a ritual intended to allow him to maintain human form.

While Cordelia Chase is in her car making out with her boyfriend, Buffy is in a nearby park fighting and killing a vampire, the third kill of her evening.
The next day, Cordelia and Willow visit the school's audiovisual club to talk to them about preparations for the upcoming Spring Fling dance. When they enter the room, they find all five club members, including Cordelia's boyfriend Kevin, are dead. The wounds on their necks indicate that they were killed by vampires.
While Buffy fights the Master, the rest of the Scooby Gang are trapped inside the school library with a horde of vampires. Angel knocks one vampire to the floor and then stakes him.
