Margaret Elizabeth "Peggy" Carter (portrayed by Hayley Atwell), more commonly known as Captain Carter, is a minor character in the 2022 movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She is a founding member of the Illuminati and is the first Avenger in her universe, suggesting she was a founding member of her universe's Avengers too.

History[]

As Stephen Strange and America Chavez travel to a different universe to escape the Scarlet Witch AKA Wanda Maximoff, they soon find themselves captured by Earth 838's Illuminati. Strange is then brought to trial by the Illuminati due to him being a Doctor Strange from a different universe. As he enters the chamber, fellow Illuminati member Baron Karl Mordo announces the beginning of the trial as Strange interrupts him when says his full name, surprised it was Karl. A shield with the symbol of the British flag is then thrown at Strange before he can say anything more. The shield ricochets off the floor and wall near him before returning to its owner who Mordo reveals to be Captain Carter herself. She then seats herself in her chair as Mordo introduces the rest of the Illuminati. As Strange unleashes his quips, she tells he should be glad that Black Bolt doesn't engage in conversation with him in which Strange continues with his jokes towards the group, making her remark on how he's more arrogant than their Doctor Strange. After Mr. Fantastic informs Strange about what an Incursion is, Carter then explains that her world's Doctor Strange created the Illuminati and that they were here to determine what to with him and America Chavez.

As Charles Xavier was introduced and he and the Illuminati started telling Strange the truth of what happened to their universe's Strange, Charles projected a flashback to Strange of the event. Carter stood along with the rest of the group as Black Bolt obliterated him.

As a disbelieving Strange asked about the statue outside of this universe's Sanctorum, Carter explained that the world needed heroes and that they made the difficult choice because they knew what their Strange was capable of. As she finished her sentence, an alarm blared with Mr. Fantastic quickly stating the building had been breached. Carter asks for a status report and holographic screens reveal that Wanda, who possessed the body of this universe's Wanda, was breaking into the building, absolutely destroying the Ultron sentries sent to stop her. Carter then tasks Mordo and Professor X to watch Strange as her, Mr. Fantastic, Captain Marvel, and Black Bolt go to deal with the threat.

As Wanda destroys the last of the Ultron sentries and makes her way to America, Carter lands in front of her with her shield and jetpack. Black Bolt, Captain Marvel, and Mr. Fantastic follow behind. As Mr. Fantastic tries to negotiate with Wanda, Carter stands defensively. After Black Bolt accidentally kills himself and Wanda turns Mr. Fantastic into ribbons, Captain Marvel and Carter exchange a look, realizing the situation. They then attack, Carter going left while Captain Marvel went right. As Captain Marvel blasted Wanda with cosmic energy which she was blocking, Carter threw her shield at her, avoiding a red blast from her in the process. The shield though did not make contact as Wanda's magic tossed it into a pillar, causing it to be stuck. Carter then runs after it, but gets knocked into another pillar after Wanda deflects another blast from Captain Marvel. She quickly gets up and avoids a few blasts from Wanda, now targeting Carter. Dodging another blast, Carter slides on her knees to retrieve her shield. She does so and runs around Wanda as Captain Marvel keeps blasting her with cosmic energy. But Wanda temporarily gets rid of Captain Marvel by ramming her with a statue into the Illuminati's building.

Now with Captain Marvel gone, Wanda focuses her attention to Carter who's silently running through the dust on the ground. She then leaps out of the dust and bashes Wanda with her shield and body. Both recover and Wanda tiredly asks if she has had enough. Carter then responds, "I can do this all day." She then swings her shield at her which Wanda dodges. Wanda then blocks a few more strikes with magic before hurling Carter away with it. Carter then used her jetpack to recover and hurls her shield once more. But this time, Wanda catches it with magic and redirects it back at Carter, cutting her in half. Her shield flies into another pillar, blood dripping off of it, and the standing Carter falls onto the floor.

Trivia[]

  • It's unknown if this Captain Carter is the same one as the one from the What If? series as she seems to share the same history.
