Enid (portrayed by Katelyn Nacon) is a supporting character in AMC's survival-horror series The Walking Dead. Introduced in Season 5, she was a young apocalypse survivor who had found refuge in the Alexandria Safe-Zone after losing both of her parents. The horrors of the post-apocalyptic world caused her to become cold and distant as she did not wish to form connections with anyone out of fear that she would eventually lose them.

When Rick Grimes and his group first arrived in Alexandria, Enid kept her distance from them, though Rick's son Carl was eager to make friends with the local kids, including her. This helps her to slowly come out of her shell and she not only comes to befriend the members of Rick's group, but also becomes romantically involved with Carl. Although Enid is devastated by Carl's death during the war with the Saviors, she doesn't let this destroy her newfound optimism for the future. Wanting to contribute to the survival of the others, she learns about medicine from Siddiq, a man that Carl had rescued from the wilderness.

Six years after the war, Enid is living in the Hilltop Colony with her new boyfriend Alden and continues to help the community with her medical skills learned from Siddiq. Tragically, she ends up becoming one of the victims of the Kingdom trade fair massacre when she is abducted and killed by the Whisperers along with several others.

History[]

Early life[]

Enid Eating Tortoise

Nothing is really known about Enid's pre-apocalypse life, though she was likely a regular young girl who attended school. When the dead began walking the earth, she and her parents struggled to survive. At some point, the family were on the road when their car broke down and Enid's mother and father attempted to jump-start it, only to be surrounded by walkers and eaten alive while Enid watched from inside the vehicle. Following their tragic deaths, she wandered in the wilderness for several months, and in order to survive, she followed her own mantra and had to recur to basic survival methods, such as eating what she could gather and sometimes wild animals like turtles.

Eventually, Enid wandered up to the gates of the Alexandria Safe-Zone, albeit reluctantly, and was welcomed in by the community. She lived with Olivia during her stay, and it took her three weeks to say a single word to anyone because of the shock that she had experienced outside. As time passed by, Enid entered a relationship with Ron Anderson and, because she was convinced that Alexandria would fall sooner or later, she started to sneak out of the community and spend time wandering around the woods to remind herself what the actual world was like.

Season 5[]

Carl Enid Running

Eight months following her arrival in Alexandria, Enid would witness the arrival of Rick Grimes and his group. When Ron introduced Rick's son Carl to her, she remained aloof and ignored him much of the time. This changed when Carl followed her during one of her excursions outside the gates and the two spent some time running through the woods together. During this time, Enid admitted that Carl scared her, though as the two hid from walkers inside a hollow tree trunk, she teasingly remarked that she scared him too after he leaned in to kiss her, only to pull away at the last moment.

Season 6[]

While Rick and several others are working to divert an enormous horde of zombies away from Alexandria, the safe-zone is attacked by a roaming group of marauders called the Wolves. During the attack, Enid finds her way into the Grimes' house to see Carl and is shocked when he pulls a weapon, believing he is under attack. Enid tells Carl goodbye, saying that she is leaving Alexandria, but Carl refuses to let her go and makes her stay behind to help him protect his sister Judith. Whilst on guard, Enid tells Carl that Alexandria is too big to protect everyone. Carl tells her not to tell him goodbye, to which Enid replies that she won't.

When Ron is being chased by a Wolf in the streets, Enid and Carl leave the house to help him. Carl shoots the Wolf and tells Ron to come inside for protection, but Ron refuses due to his strained relationship with Carl and leaves. Sometime after the attack, Enid keeps her promise to Carl and quietly leaves the safe-zone, only leaving behind a note for him to find that says "Just Survive Somehow".

Enid Rooftop

After Enid spends the night in an abandoned town, she awakes the next day to see Glenn Rhee emerging from under a dumpster following the semi-failed herd movement plan, and throws him a water bottle. She informs him that Alexandria was attacked and then runs away before he can question her further. Glenn chases Enid into the street but loses her.

Enid manages to remain hidden for several hours around the abandoned buildings of the town. When she hides from walkers inside a restaurant, Glenn finds her and orders her to return to Alexandria. She points a gun at him but begrudgingly complies when he wrests it away from her. As they are making their way back to the safe-zone, Enid confesses the reason she left was that she is afraid of losing the people she cares about.

Later that day, they come across green balloons left over from the walker-herding mission, and Enid suggests they use them to distract walkers. Glenn directs her to a bush concealing more balloons and a helium tank. As Enid inflates more balloons, Glenn lectures her about acting rashly out of fear. They then arrive at Alexandria to find it surrounded by walkers. Enid's mood sinks but Glenn insists they forge ahead.

Enid and Glenn watch as walkers swarm into Alexandria from afar. She looks on with tears, beginning to walk away when Glenn stops her. He informs her that you lose people when you walk away from them and their troubles more so than when people die horrifically. Later that day, they climb a tree to get a closer look at the horrors going on in Alexandria when they spot Maggie trapped on an unsteady guard tower. Enid's hope shrinks even more after seeing this.

Enid and Glenn carefully sneak into a church outside of Alexandria to search for weapons that may be hidden that they could use to save Maggie. Whilst searching, Enid finds a Bible quote on the church walls: "Faith without works is dead." This reminds her of the loss of her parents. She asks Glenn what he meant when he said if you run, you lose people, even after they're gone. He tells her that she has to hold on to who she is to honour those who have made her the person she is and that her parents continue to live on in her.

When Glenn asks her to stay at the church whilst he saves Maggie, Enid utterly refuses, saying that she can handle herself and insists she will help him save her because he was right that they must not give up on Alexandria. Enid formulates a plan to get Maggie down and informs him that she will follow him even without his consent. She eventually finds a gun and hands it to him. When asked once more to stay at the church, Enid refuses again.

Later that night, they enter Alexandria. Glenn distracts the walkers by shooting them, drawing them away from the platform Maggie is trapped on whilst Enid runs over to Maggie and climbs up and joins her, where they see that Glenn is becoming overrun by walkers, but they are relieved when Abraham Ford and Sasha Williams open fire on the walkers, saving Glenn's life at the last minute. Enid and Maggie are helped down shortly after.

Enid and the others then get into the truck that Daryl, Sasha, and Abraham used to return to Alexandria and leave a fuel trail, then light it on fire, luring the walkers in and killing a large number of them whilst Rick and the Alexandrians kill the rest of the walkers. Enid joins in the walker extermination which goes on until dawn, ending with every last walker slain with no further loss of life to the community.

Season 7[]

After the walker invasion, Enid pitches in with repair efforts around the community and helps with organizing their inventory of supplies. However, in the days to come, Alexandria finds itself being subjugated by a group of hostile survivors calling themselves the Saviors, who have decided that Alexandria will provide food and resources for them in exchange for the continued survival of its residents.

A few days following Alexandria's subjugation, Enid leaves to travel to another recently-discovered community: the Hilltop. Carl follows after Enid and joins her, telling her how the Saviors' leader Negan had murdered Abraham and Glenn while he had been forced to watch. Enid had left Alexandria in order to help the pregnant Maggie who was in hiding at Hilltop, but Carl admits that he was planning to find Negan and kill him. She asks Carl not to go, but he sticks to his mission. Carl kisses her forehead, leading them to share a romantic kiss with each other. When the Saviors leave, Enid enters the community and ties up green balloons to what she believes is Glenn's grave. Maggie finds her and they hug.

That night, Enid cooks dinner for Maggie in Jesus' trailer. Sasha joins them and asks why balloons are tied to Abraham's grave. Maggie tells Enid she didn't have the heart to tell her it was the wrong grave while Enid says there was nothing marking the plots. Maggie then gives Glenn's pocket watch to Enid, saying they don't need objects to remember their dead. They sit around the table, take each other's hands and pray.

Over the coming days, Rick tries to organize a resistance against the Saviors, discussing plans not only with the people at Alexandria but reaching out to Hilltop as well. While the Hilltop's leader Gregory flat-out refuses to have any part in defying the Saviors, Enid goes among the Hilltop residents and asks if anyone is willing to fight, convincing most of them to go along with Rick's plan. While Rick travels to the Kingdom to meet with Ezekiel, Enid stays at Hilltop and trains its residents in the proper use of knives in combat. Later still, Sasha decides to leave Hilltop on a mission to kill Negan. Enid pleads for Sasha to stay, but Sasha refuses, handing Enid a bracelet for Maggie's baby and tells her to work on it while she's gone. Enid is unconvinced and warns Sasha she'll give her a ten-minute head start before telling Maggie what's going on.

A couple of days later, Enid accompanies a group led by Rick to the small coastal community of Oceanside, which Tara had discovered weeks ago. During this mission, she asks Carl if he ever thinks about any of the people he has had to kill since the world ended. Upon arriving at Oceanside, the group holds the Oceansiders hostage as Rick explains he doesn't want to hurt anyone. When Natania appears holding Tara at gunpoint, Enid stands unnoticed behind her and aims her gun ready to shoot.

After several walkers approach the community, Cyndie knocks Natania out and Enid stares in shock, having been relieved of the necessity to kill Natania herself. She then helps the group and the Oceansiders take out the herd. Once the threat is over and the group starts gathering the guns, Carl tells Enid he also thinks about the people he didn't kill.

With battle about to erupt between Alexandria and the Saviors, Enid remains at Hilltop to take care of Judith while Maggie and Jesus take several Hilltop fighters to reinforce Rick's army. The first battle of the war ends with a victory for the Militia, though it is not without its losses, as Enid discovers that Sasha has become a walker and watches as Maggie puts her down.

Season 8[]

Enid would take part in a Militia attack on the Sanctuary which ended with the Saviors' base being surrounded by a herd of walkers. After returning to the Hilltop following the battle, she resumed guard duty when Gregory appeared outside the gates, having escaped from the Sanctuary in the car he had stolen after leaving Gabriel Stokes to die. Enid was happy to leave Gregory outside, but Maggie decided to let him in, stating that he was too pathetic to kill.

With Maggie taking charge at the Hilltop, Enid remains there and acts as her number-two, keeping the residents informed of Maggie's decisions. However, when Aaron decides to leave to embark on a dangerous mission, she offers to go with him. The pair head for Oceanside to convince the women there to join the fight against the Saviors. However, as they approach Oceanside under the cover of darkness, Aaron is ambushed by Natania and Enid is forced to kill her to save Aaron. The two are then captured by the Oceansiders and it is left to Cyndie, Natania's granddaughter, to decide what to do with them. Cyndie considers having Enid and Aaron executed, but Enid convinces her not to, warning her that the Militia will come looking for them eventually and will destroy Oceanside in retribution if they kill her and Aaron. Cyndie decides to set the two free, warning them to leave and never return, but Aaron opts to remain at Oceanside to try and convince the community to help against the Saviors, telling Enid to return to the Hilltop.

When Enid returns to Hilltop, she is given disastrous news by Maggie: the Saviors had attacked Alexandria and Carl is dead. Devastated by this tragic turn of events, Enid begins to question what they are all fighting for in the end, and whether there is truly anything to fight for other than survival. Michonne points out that Carl hadn't died fighting Saviors but by being bitten by a walker whilst saving someone. Carl had also left a number of letters to various people, including Enid, expressing his hopes for the future and his dream where everyone could stop fighting and come together to build a world better than the one they had lost.

Enid would ultimately survive the war against the Saviors and, seeing how Rick had spared Negan and the surrendering Saviors, began to regain her hope, believing that it could be possible to achieve Carl's dream.

Season 9[]

In the years since the war, Enid had become a permanent resident of Hilltop along with former Savior Alden, who becomes her boyfriend. She also learns about medicine from Siddiq, becoming Hilltop's assisting doctor. However, after several of her friends run afoul of an aggressive new group of survivors known as the Whisperers, the communities of the Coalition once again find themselves in great peril.

During a trade fair at the Kingdom intended to reunite the communities after a lengthy period of isolation, Enid and several other fair patrons are captured by the Whisperers. She and the other captives are held inside a stable where they are to be executed, but the captives fight back against the aggressors. However, Alpha arrives with reinforcements, leading to the slaughter of most of the group with only Siddiq being left alive as a witness. The ten victims of the massacre are decapitated and their heads planted on pikes which Alpha uses to mark the border between the Whisperers' and Coalition's territories.

The next day, Daryl, Michonne, Carol and Yumiko are released from the Whisperers' camp after being captured the night before. They find Siddiq not far from the newly-established border. The group are shocked and heartbroken to witness the reanimated heads of ten of their friends and family members planted upon the hill as a grim marker. After putting down the zombified heads, the group return to the Kingdom and Siddiq tells everyone what had happened, remarking how the victims of the massacre had all fought valiantly for one another until the very end and that they should be remembered as heroes.
