Even Piell is a character from the Star Wars universe, initially appearing as a background character in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace but later playing an important role in the third season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He was a male Lannik who served on the Jedi Council during the Naboo crisis and the Clone Wars. Considered brusque, bellicose, and even gruff, Master Piell was nonetheless respected for his immense courage.

Piell was portrayed in live-action in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones by Michaela Cottrell. He was voiced by Blair Bess in The Clone Wars.

History[]

In 20 BBY, one year and nine months into the Clone Wars, Master Piell was involved in a dangerous mission in the galaxy's Outer Rim. He had come across vital information regarding the Nexus Route, a hyperspace lane that linked the core worlds of the Galactic Republic with those of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Whichever side gained this information would hold a decisive advantage in the war. To ensure that this intelligence did not fall into enemy hands, Piell memorized only half of it while the other half was memorized by the captain of his flagship, Wilhuff Tarkin. All electronic memory of the information was then erased.

While en route back to Coruscant, Piell's ship was attacked by Separatists and the Jedi Master and his command staff were captured. They were taken to the planet Lola Sayu and imprisoned in the Confederacy's most secure penal facility, the Citadel. There, Piell was tortured for the information he carried, but he never broke. Republic forces led by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker would later come to rescue Piell and his remaining crew.

As the Jedi and their clone troopers made their escape, Osi Sobeck - commander of the Citadel - alerted all of his droid forces to hunt down the escapees and recapture Piell. Though the heroes would succeed in escaping from the fortress' main detention area, they would suffer heavy losses in the attempt. When they made it to the Citadel's landing platform, their escape plan went awry as the shuttle they planned to flee on was destroyed by turret fire. With no other way off-planet, they had to contact the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and send for a rescue party.

As they were walking to the extraction point, Piell sensed the Separatists coming and warned the others. Everyone prepared for battle. During the battle, he destroyed some droids before an anooba jumped and attacked him. Ahsoka Tano used the Force to hurl the creature away, but not before it gravely injured Piell. Tano attempted to call help, but Piell told her to stay so he could give her the information and instruct her to relay it only to the Jedi Council. She refused, saying Kenobi or Skywalker needed to hear it, and that she only lied to be a part of the mission. But Piell told her that she was now the most important part of the mission and that she had to remember the information and make sure only the Jedi Council knew it. Tano finally agreed and Piell whispered the information into her. Shortly thereafter, Piell succumbed to his injuries. With little time for the others to mourn him, Obi-Wan used the Force to lift Master Piell's body and lower it into a river of lava.
