General Grune (voiced by Clancy Brown) was a supporting antagonist in the 2011 ThunderCats series. Based off the character of the same name from the original 1985 cartoon, Grune is a sabertoothed cat and a mighty warrior. In the 2011 series, he was one of King Claudus' most trusted warriors, though he harboured a strong desire for power which would ultimately lead to him siding with the evil Mumm-Ra.

History[]

Grune was a General in the army of Thundera who was best friends with Panthro in the past while confiding in him his desire to rise up the ranks. During one of their missions, Grune ripped his sabertooth off to save Panthro from Spidera. When Grune and Panthro sparred to prove themselves to get a promotion from Claudus, the King instead promoted Lynx-O to general and assigned Grune and Panthro to find the legendary Book of Omens. Grune felt betrayed and drove himself mad with his own paranoia. Eventually, his jealousy towards the King was used by Mumm-Ra to convince Grune to become his follower and serve a key role in Thundera's downfall.

Swayed by Mumm-Ra's promises of power, Grune allied himself with the demon and led the Lizard army in their assault on Thundera. The cat kingdom was sacked and Grune continued to lead the Lizard forces alongside Slithe as they went about conquering the lands of Third Earth in Mumm-Ra's name. However, Grune also intended to betray Mumm-Ra in the long run and dominate the planet himself.

Fate[]

In the episode "Between Brothers", Grune led an attack on the Elephants' village to obtain the Spirit Stone. While Lion-O and Tygra were busy confronting Mumm-Ra in the Astral Plane, Grune attempted to seize the stone for himself, but was forced to battle against his former friend Panthro. After Lion-O and Tygra returned to the Material Plane, Panthro was able to force Grune into the portal between the planes and take the Spirit Stone from him. The portal closed while Panthro held Grune on the other side, leading to Grune becoming lost in the Astral Plane. Panthro also lost his arms when the portal closed, but considered his revenge against Grune worth the price.
