Heimdall (portrayed by Idris Elba) is a supporting character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most notably appearing in the Thor films. Based on the character from both Norse mythology and Marvel Comics, he was the Gatekeeper of Asgard, responsible for controlling the Bifrost that allowed passage across the Nine Realms. As an Asgardian, he possessed an extremely long lifespan in comparison to humans as well as tremendous strength and stamina. He was also omniscient, able to see the activities of his allies and enemies across worlds and would summon the Bifrost for Thor when called upon.
Heimdall has been a staunch ally of Thor in Thor, Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok. During Ragnarok, he fought alongside Thor, Loki, Valkyrie and the Hulk as they tried to save the inhabitants of Asgard from the vengeful Hela. Ultimately, Thor was forced to cause Ragnarok by awakening Surtur, whose crown was stored in Odin's vault. While Surtur destroyed Hela and all of Asgard, Heimdall escaped with his people aboard the Statesman as it made its way to Earth.
Death[]
In Avengers: Infinity War, the Statesman was attacked by Thanos and the Black Order, who severely damaged the ship and slaughtered half the Asgardians aboard. After witnessing the murder of Loki and both Thor and Hulk being subdued by the Mad Titan, Heimdall called upon the Allfathers' magicks one last time and summoned the Bifrost, transporting Hulk back to Earth. In retaliation, Thanos took Heimdall's sword and impaled him with it before using the Power Stone to completely destroy the Statesman.
