Jared is a supporting character in Seasons 7 and 8 of The Walking Dead. He is an apocalypse survivor and a member of the Saviors, a large group of survivors who use violence and intimidation to force other communities into serving them. Very much the quintessential Savior, Jared is an arrogant and obnoxious bully who enjoys antagonizing others for his own amusement. He is portrayed by Joshua Mikel.
History[]
Season 7[]
Nothing is known about Jared's pre-apocalypse life. As a member of the Saviors, he worked under Gavin and assisted in collecting food tributes from the Kingdom. During his first appearance, Jared repeatedly antagonized Richard, smugly believing that his status as a Savior made him untouchable. Even when Richard retaliated, Jared wasn't reprimanded for his behaviour in any way.
A week later, Jared is once again present when the Saviors come for their weekly tribute. Picking up where they had previously left off, Jared demands that Richard give him his gun. Ezekiel then orders Richard to comply, but even after getting the gun, Jared continues to harrass Richard, leading to Morgan Jones stepping in and knocking him to the ground with his staff. Jared gets up and takes Morgan's staff from him, but then Benjamin steps forward and knocks Jared down again. The fight is diffused and the Saviors leave, with Jared keeping the staff he took from Morgan.
The following week, Gavin and his group arrive at the drop point and Jared mocks Morgan with his staff. When Gavin finds that the supply shipment is missing a single canteloupe, he demands that the Kingdomers give up their weapons and permits Jared to kill Richard as punishment. Instead, Jared shoots Benjamin in the leg, the shot severing an artery. Angered, Gavin orders Jared to return Morgan's staff before they leave. The Kingdomers quickly take Benjamin home to get him medical attention, but he dies.
The next day, Gavin's team return for the missing canteloupe and Ezekiel informs them of Benjamin's death. Jared is amused by this news, but Gavin scolds him and tells him to walk back to the outpost, threatening to kill him if he doesn't listen. Jared walks away in embarrassment, turning back briefly to see Morgan strangling Richard to death for his involvement in the events leading to Benjamin's death.
Season 8[]
When war breaks out between the Saviors and the Militia, Jared is stationed at the Saviors' satellite outpost, having been sent there as punishment for disobeying Gavin's orders and killing Benjamin unnecessarily. When the Militia attacked the outpost, the Saviors found themselves outnumbered and outgunned. While Maggie initially wanted to execute them all, Jesus stated that they had surrendered and that it was more prudent and humane to take them prisoner. Jared and the others were bound with ropes and escorted back to the Hilltop.
For a time, Jared and the other Savior captives were kept locked up in a makeshift pen out in the Hilltop's main yard. While imprisoned, Jared continues to antagonize Morgan at every opportunity and makes a few escape attempts, only to be talked out of it by Alden who urges the others to cooperate so that Maggie doesn't decide to execute them.
One night, Simon lead the Saviors into attacking the Hilltop. Although Maggie warned Simon that his attack would endanger his imprisoned comrades, Simon made it clear that he didn't care about them and had his troops charge in. Trapped inside the pen, the Savior prisoners had nowhere to go as arrows tainted with walker blood flew over the walls. Two prisoners were struck by these arrows, and while they received medical attention after the battle, they still succumbed to infection. In the middle of the night, young Henry came out to the pen and demanded to know which of the Saviors was responsible for killing his brother Benjamin. He opened the gate and entered the pen, ready to start shooting everyone if no one confessed. At that moment, one of the previously-injured prisoners reanimated and attacked. While Henry was distracted by this, Jared kicked him to the ground and urged the others to follow him as he fled from the pen, leading most of the others out of the Hilltop.
After fleeing from the Hilltop, Jared and the other escapees took shelter in an abandoned dive bar. During the escape, two of the escapees had been bitten by zombies and required amputations to prevent death by infection, but were in no condition to travel afterwards. Rick Grimes and Morgan Jones had gone in search of them, but while they were observing a nearby herd of walkers, the Saviors ambushed and captured them. Rick and Morgan awoke to find their captors arguing amongst themselves, with Reilly suggesting that they cut their losses and run, leaving their captives behind. Jared, on the other hand, wanted to bring Rick back to the Sanctuary to gain Negan's favour. However, after waking, Morgan began shouting at the Saviors and his cries drew the nearby herd towards them. As the zombies attacked, Rick urged Reilly to free him and Morgan. Reilly did so and Rick began shooting at the incoming zombies, although half the Savior group had already fallen to the undead. Rick then turned on the Saviors by hacking at Reilly with a hatchet and shooting three other Saviors.
Jared attempted to escape, but Morgan went after him. The two fought and Jared briefly gained the upper hand, grabbing a sharp stick and attempting to kill Morgan with it, but Morgan kicked Jared off of him. Jared fled into a hallway only to find it crawling with walkers. As he turned back, Morgan closed a grate on him, leaving him trapped. Thrusting his arms through the grate, Morgan grabbed Jared by the shirt and held him in place so that he couldn't run. The zombies then closed in and started feeding on Jared, tearing at his back and his face. Morgan then let the screaming Jared go, watching as the undead dragged him away to devour him.
