For the primary timeline version of this character, see Jiaying.

An alternate version of Jiaying appears in the seventh season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which occurs in a timeline where Earth's history has been altered by the Chronicoms. In this timeline, Jiaying is still the leader of the Inhuman sanctuary Afterlife, though she has not adopted a militant approach to protecting Inhumans since she has not experienced the trauma of repeated experimentation by HYDRA. Additionally, this incarnation of Jiaying has a daughter named Kora, who never appeared in the primary timeline since she had committed suicide in 1983.

History[]

After, Before[]

In 1983, Jiaying was struggling to help her daughter Kora control her powers of energy manipulation, fearing that she could be a danger to herself and everyone around her. With the aid of Gordon and Li, she kept preventing Kora from leaving Afterlife, though this only pushed Kora further down the path towards suicide.

When Melinda May and Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez unexpectedly arrived at Afterlife, Jiaying was wary of their presence. When Yo-Yo claimed to be an Inhuman, she was asked to prove it and Li brought forth a Diviner, a Terrigen-based device that would kill any non-Inhuman upon touch. Yo-Yo pressed the Diviner against her cheek and nothing happened, thus her claim was validated. Jiaying agreed to help how she could, but medical tests would reveal that there was nothing physically wrong with Yo-Yo to explain why she couldn't use her power of super-speed. Jiaying determined that the problem must be psychological and suggested that she search for a solution via meditation. Since May possessed empathic abilities at the time, Jiaying suggested that she and Yo-Yo meditate together.

Some time later, Afterlife was invaded by Nathaniel Malick, who wanted to grant Inhuman powers to his followers. He arrived at the time when Kora was about to kill herself and he talked her down from it, suggesting that she use her powers without the restraints that her mother was attempting to place on her. Kora found the idea appealing and used her power against Li when he tried to subdue her, burning his face. Threatened by Malick and Kora, Jiaying escaped from Afterlife thanks to Gordon's teleportation ability. May and Yo-Yo also joined them and together they would meet with the other members of S.H.I.E.L.D. once the team had figured out how to fix the time-jump drive on the Zephyr One.

Stolen[]

Jiaying and Gordon were given the coordinates of the Lighthouse and teleported in to meet with the other members of S.H.I.E.L.D.. There, she explained the situation at Afterlife and how Malick had manipulated her daughter into joining him. The team discussed how they were going to get into Afterlife and Phil Coulson suggested that Gordon teleport them inside, which Jiaying reluctantly agreed to.

Following Coulson's and Gordon's departure, Jiaying spoke with Daisy Johnson, expressing her fear of Afterlife's destruction. Daisy assured her that Afterlife was important to her and S.H.I.E.L.D. too, but Jiaying was confused, saying that they knew nothing about it. At that moment, Daniel Sousa stepped into the conversation, telling Jiaying that Daisy had learned to use her powers at Afterlife in her timeline. Reluctantly, Daisy demonstrated her vibration manipulation power to Jiaying by making a glass of water shake. Jiaying then realized that Daisy's power was similar to Malick's, who had tortured Daisy to obtain it and must have used knowledge of the future to get Kora on his side. Jiaying talked about her problems with Kora and Daisy brought up how she had grown up without a mother and found out the hard way that she was not who she had imagined her to be when they finally did meet. Jiaying admitted she did not know Daisy's mother, but speaking as a mother herself, trying to do the right thing does not always work out as intended.

As Jiaying and Daisy were walking through the Lighthouse, Malick suddenly appeared before them. He told Jiaying that Kora sent her regards, but she at least still had one daughter left. Jiaying was confused by this comment, but soon realized that Malick was referring to Daisy. Malick continued to tell Jiaying about her own backstory, how she had grown to despise humans after being experimented on and that she attempted to go to war against them. Enraged by this, Jiaying attacked Malick and attempted to drain his life force with her power, but Malick projected a shockwave from his hand and snapped her neck, instantly killing her.
