Joseph "Joe" Yoshinobu Takagi is a minor character in the first Die Hard film. A Japanese immigrant, he came to America during World War II, interned at Manzanar from 1942 to 1943, earned a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley, enrolling in 1955. He also earned a law degree from Stanford in 1962 and an MBA from Harvard in 1970. Eventually, Takagi became President of Nakatomi Trading and Vice Chairman of Nakatomi Investment Group. Takagi was married and had five children.
Takagi was portrayed by James Shigeta.
Takagi dies early on in the film. When Hans Gruber and his terrorist group raided Nakatomi Plaza, he was taken away by Hans and questioned regarding the access codes to the building's main vault containing millions in bearer bonds. Takagi refused to give Hans the code keys, stating that the corporation's head office in Tokyo would immediately be alerted by any attempted break-in and that the codes would be instantly changed. Takagi said to Hans that he may as well kill him. Hans replied "OK," and then shot Takagi in the head, painting the window behind him red.
