Jonathan Clemens was a supporting character in the sci-fi horror film Alien 3. He served as the chief medical officer of the prison facility on Fiorina 161, though he was originally sent there as a prisoner having been charged with criminal negligence in the past. When Ellen Ripley arrives on the planet, Clemens helps her to acclimatize to her new circumstances. He was portrayed by Charles Dance.

History[]

Early life[]

As a young man, Clemens had graduated in the top 5% of his class at medical school, with a particular aptitude for recombinant synthetic surgery. During this time, however, he also developed an addiction to morphine, though he apparently kept it under control. His medical career took a nosedive during his first residency when he got drunk following a 36-hour shift in an emergency room. A boiler explosion at a fuel plant led to his being recalled to hospital, where Clemens, in his intoxicated state, prescribed an incorrect dose of painkiller, leading to the deaths of eleven of the thirty casualties of the accident.

Charged with manslaughter resulting from gross incompetence, Clemens was sentenced to seven years imprisonment at the penal complex on Fiorina 161. While incarcerated, he overcame his morphine addiction and developed a kinship with the other inmates who came to trust him with their treatment whenever they needed medical attention. When the facility was closed down in 2175, Clemens opted to stay along with several other inmates, knowing that he would never be allowed to practice medicine on the outside.

Meeting Ellen Ripley[]

In 2179, an escape pod from the USS Sulaco crash-landed on Fiorina 161. Ellen Ripley was the only survivor to be found and was taken to Clemens for treatment. After nursing Ripley back to health, Clemens informed her that her companions - Dwayne Hicks and Newt - had both died inside their cryotubes. After hearing this, Ripley urged Clemens to carry out an autopsy. While Clemens felt an autopsy was unnecessary, he decided to put Ridley's mind at ease and carry out the procedure, though he did so without authorization from the Superintendent.

Not long after Ripley's arrival, a number of inmates turned up dead. While the deaths were initially dismissed as accidents, Clemens was not so sure. After discovering what appeared to be some form of acid burn at the sight of the first victim's death, he confronted Ripley with this information, certain that she knew something. Later, Walter Golic was accused of the murders, but he insisted that the victims were killed by what he referred to as a "dragon". Ripley confirmed that this creature was a Xenomorph, one of the alien creatures she had encountered on LV-426.

Death[]

While at the infirmary, Clemens was pressed by Ripley to explain the barcode on the back of his head. Though hesitant, he eventually relented and explained the incident that led to him being incarcerated, as well as the barcode being tattooed on his head. Clemens then asked Ripley if she still trusted him with a needle, and she declared that she did. After Jonathan injected her with serum, the Dragon suddenly entered the infirmary through an overhead ventilation shaft. Upon retracting the needle, Clemens was suddenly attacked through the hospital sheets by the Dragon, which lifted him into the air and smashed his skull in with its inner jaw before throwing his lifeless, bloodied body aside.
