Kung Lao is a supporting character in the animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms. He is a warrior monk of the White Lotus Society along with Liu Kang and one of the warriors chosen by Raiden to help defend Earthrealm in the final Mortal Kombat tournament proposed by Shao Kahn. He is voiced by Matthew Yang King.
History[]
Following Liu Kang's victory in Mortal Kombat, the armies of Outworld begin making incursions into Earthrealm. Kung Lao, along with Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Jax Briggs and Kurtis Stryker, stands in defence of the Wu Shi Academy when it comes under attack by Outworld forces. In the midst of the battle, Shao Kahn appears and proposes to Raiden a final Mortal Kombat tournament to determine Earth's fate once and for all. Should Earthrealm's warriors win, Kahn's claim will be forever rendered void and Outworld will never threaten Earthrealm again. Despite protests from his allies, Raiden agrees, seeing this final tournament as the only way to put an end to the generations of bloodshed.
After the Elder Gods have accepted Shao Kahn's proposal, the Earth warriors travel to the emperor's fortress in Outworld where the tournament is to be held. Over the next two days, a series of bloody battles take place. Kung Lao battles against the Edenian warrior Jade, though it is not clear if he kills her.
Death[]
Later in the tournament, Shao Kahn decides to participate himself and Kung Lao faces the emperor in kombat. It becomes frightfully clear that Kahn is in a whole other league compared to the other kontenders as he is largely unfazed by Lao's attacks and dominates the Shaolin warrior with his overwhelming strength. He even turns Lao's favoured weapon against him, catching his razor-rimmed hat in-flight and tossing it back at him. The hat carves a deep wound in Lao's chest, which Kahn takes advantage of in order to deliver a fatality. Kahn approaches Lao and removes the hat from his chest, then presses his hands into the monk's chest wound. He then uses his great strength to pull Lao into two halves, killing him in a most gruesome fashion while the other Earthrealm warriors watch in horror from the sidelines.
