Luther Banks was a minor supporting character in the third season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. He was an agent of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit and the right-hand man of Rosalind Price. Like Price, Banks was unaware that his organization was under the control of HYDRA.
History[]
Banks began his career working in the U.S. Marine Corps, but was later discharged with cause. Following the Battle of New York, he and Price (operating under an alias at the time) infiltrated NASA as members of an anti-alien task force, later being recruited by Gideon Malick for Project Distant Star Return.
In 2015, Banks was appointed field commander of the ATCU, charged with locating and capturing any Inhumans who posed a danger to public safety. His team attempted to subdue an Inhuman named Joey Gutierrez who possessed the power to melt metal, but Joey panicked and accidentally started melting metallic objects all around him, including the guns of the agents who confronted him. Deeming Gutierrez as a deadly threat, Banks issued a kill-order on him, but Gutierrez was extracted by S.H.I.E.L.D..
Throughout their Inhuman investigations, the ATCU would continue to have run-ins with S.H.I.E.L.D.. When both organizations began pursuing an Inhuman designated "Lash", Phil Coulson and Rosalind Price began collaborating, and after some intense meetings to establish trust with one another, decided to work together in handling Inhuman cases. However, it would later be discovered that the ATCU were unwitting pawns in a scheme orchestrated by HYDRA to distribute Terrigen to the public in order to create an army of Inhumans.
Death[]
In the episode "Closure", Price was assassinated in her home by Grant Ward. Outraged by Price's murder, Coulson went on the warpath and organized a manhunt for Ward, intent on putting him down once and for all. Banks was brought in on the plan and provided an armed escort for Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons as they investigated HYDRA's defunct Distant Star facility. When they arrived, however, they were confronted by the Inhuman R. Giyera, who used telekinesis to manipulate Banks into shooting his own agents. Giyera then manipulated the gun out of Banks' hands and used it to shoot him in the face.
