Mark Gray is a supporting character in the slasher-horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. He is portrayed by Joe Seely and is the third character to die in the film.

History[]

Mark was a friend of Alice Johnson and Dan Jordan and also harboured romantic feelings for their mutual friend Greta Gibson. He was an aspiring comic book artist who hoped to find work in the comic industry one day, even inventing his own superhero called "The Phantom Prowler".

When Freddy Krueger returned to begin another murderous rampage, he claimed Dan as his first victim. Alice tried to convince her friends that Freddy was responsible, but Mark did not believe her. However, after Greta's died the following day, Mark began listening to Alice's claims and wished to learn all he could about Freddy.

While meeting with Alice at his home, Mark fell asleep while Alice went to make him some coffee. In the dream, he found himself at the dilapidated house of 1428 Elm Street where Freddy had once lived. Within the house, a hellish pit opened up and Mark almost fell in, but Alice had entered the dream and saved him.

Mark and Alice would later discover through extensive research that Freddy's mother Amanda was the only one who could stop him. When Amanda had died at Westin Hills Asylum, her body was never buried and her soul was believed to be imprisoned within a dream version of the asylum tower. Alice decided that she had to enter the dream realm in order to find Amanda and release her in order to stop Freddy.

While Alice ventured into the dream world to find Amanda, Mark tried to stay awake, but inevitably fell asleep as well. His dreamscape appeared to be a black-and-white version of his father's warehouse where he was the only thing that appeared to be in colour. When Freddy appeared before him, Mark tried to fight back by transforming into the Phantom Prowler, his own superhero character. Unfortunately, Freddy is the only one of them with any real power in the dream and he is unharmed by the Phantom Prowler's gunshots. Freddy then turns Mark into a paper caricature of himself and slashes him to pieces with his finger blades. In the real world, Mark appears similarly mutilated as his body is wracked with severe cuts and gashes. Freddy also causes several shelves in the warehouse to collapse upon Mark, crushing him to death.
