Nicholai Ginovaef is a member of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Force in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, serving as second-in-command of his unit under Carlos Olivera. His character is portrayed by Zack Ward and is named after the main villain of the video game Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. This version of Nicholai, however, is not a villain and possesses a distinct sense of right and wrong and a willingness to help the citizens of Raccoon City despite the orders of his superiors.
During the crisis in Raccoon, Nicholai and Carlos quickly become the only surviving members of their unit after the rest of their squad are killed by the growing legions of Undead. The two are later contacted by Umbrella researcher Dr. Charles Ashford, who has hacked the city's phone network to contact whatever survivors he can to offer them escape from the city in exchange for finding his missing daughter Angela. Nicholai and Carlos head for the girl's school where they encounter other survivors and Nicholai saves Jill Valentine and Angela from being killed by mutated police dogs. After putting down an attacking dog, Nicholai introduces himself to Jill but is then suddenly pounced by another dog. He tells Jill to save the girl while he wrestles with the Undead canine, but another dog appears and he is mauled to death.
