Richie Mason is a supporting character in the sci-fi thriller film Virus. He is portrayed by Sherman Augustus.

History[]

Richie was a crew member aboard the tugboat Sea Star under Captain Robert Everton. Prior to this job, he had served in the US Navy as an engineer for six years, but resigned for unknown reasons. Under most circumstances, Richie came across as selfish and sometimes rash, but his shipmates underestimated his intelligence.

When the Sea Star came upon the Russian research vessel Akademik Vladislav Volkov, Richie did the math and estimated the ship's salvage value at $30 million. Excited as he was at the thought of "easy money", his enthusiasm turned to horror when he and the others were attacked by bio-mechanical creatures infesting the ship, constructed from advanced robotic machinery as well as parts of the deceased crew. After witnessing the death of J.W. Woods Jr., Richie abandoned the others and made his own plans to escape using an ejection seat set up in the Volkov's missile bay.

Death[]

Though he had planned to use the ejector to escape from the ship, Richie felt unable to just leave his friends to their fate. Wielding several weapons taken from the ship's arms locker, he joined Steve Baker and Nadia Vinogradova in rescuing Kelly Foster who had been captured by the Goliath cyborg controlled by the electrical entity inhabiting the ship's main computer. Richie fired a rocket launcher at the Goliath, but the hulking robotic monster got back up and tore open the machine shop ceiling, bringing down a ton of torn steel. Richie was buried under the shrapnel and impaled through the torso by a broken metal beam. As he bled out, he told Steve about the ejector seat and urged him and Foster to use it to escape. He then died from a combination of shock and blood loss.
