Rinic Tolven was a minor antagonist in the third season of Farscape, appearing in the episode "Thanks For Sharing". He was the security director of the planet Kanvia and son of the planet's ruler Rinic Pralanoth. He played the part of the loyal son, but desired to usurp his father and become ruler himself. He was portrayed by Sandy Winton.

History[]

While Moya was helping Talyn recuperate from a Peacekeeper attack, the crew attempted to acquire chromextin, a stimulant that would aid Talyn's recovery. They landed on Kanvia and attempted to barter, but after Tolven made sexual advances on Chiana, she struck him and negotiations fell apart.

John Crichton (who at the time had been "twinned" by Kaarvok and existed as two individuals) attempted to salvage the deal. One of the Crichtons met with the Rinic family to negotiate, but Tolven was suspicious of his motives after discovering Moya and Talyn in low orbit. To assure the Rinics of his intentions, Crichton allowed them to place a Stranit on his head. The small crustacean creature could detect whenever a sentient lied and was trained to kill, but Crichton spoke truthfully and so the Renics agreed to give him half of the chromextin supply he had wanted with the rest awaiting delivery.

Following that meeting, Crichton met with Rinic Sarova in a refreshment house after hours to continue negotiations, but someone was aware of the meeting and attempted to kill them with an explosive. Crichton and Sarova both survived, but the assassination attempt on Sarova made Crichton appear guilty and it seemed that negotiations were ground to a halt. As fortune would have it, however, Crichton's twin would be capable of salvaging the deal as he could truthfully deny having been present at the crime scene without Tolven being any the wiser.

Death[]

When the second Crichton met with the Renics, he subjected himself to the Stranit. Since the Renics were not aware that there were two Crichtons, they accepted his story and the Stranit's withdrawal. However, the chromextin that Talyn had received had been tainted with clorium, a substance that numbs Leviathans, and Crichton suspected Tolven of poisoning the supply. Tolven subjects himself to the Stranit to prove his innocence and it seems that he is telling the truth but Crichton then asks if Tolven is truly a loyal son to Pralanoth. Tolven hesitates to answer, but Pralanoth forces him to. Tolven says that he has been loyal, but the Stranit detects his lie and penetrates his skull with its stinger, killing him instantly.
