Sergeant Claiborne is a minor character in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.
History[]
Sergeant Claiborne is first seen returning from hunting for sport alongside Buldeo and an unnamed soldier. When Nathoo asks what happened, Buldeo explains it was just a few animals here or there. However, Nathoo berates them and asks how they would like it if they had some of their food stolen and being intruded in. Afterwards, he and the others continue their trek.
Death[]
That night, after setting up camp for the night, Claiborne is preparing a game of solitaire. Soon he hears a tiger’s growl. After he sees a tiger card, he brushes it off as his imagination. However a roar confirms his original suspicions and he turns around to see Shere Khan pouncing on him. Soon this gets the attention of the camp and Colonel Brydon sees what happened. When Dr. Plumford asks what happened, the Colonel believes Claiborne was attacked. Soon the doctor decides to see if the sergeant is alright, but finds he was killed.
