Sergeant Harley is one of the antagonists of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.
History[]
Harley first appears in the city's dungeon when Boone has Mowgli arrested. He tries to politely ask the jungle boy, but he gets kicked in his groin. As a result, he beats the prisoner until Colonel Brydon arrives and berates him for his actions. Despite being told to treat Mowgli with respect, Boone suggests he do the opposite. However his actions prove fruitless. Kitty comes in and soon suggests they reintroduce him to society. Then he and his friends lie about not hurting him but she refuses to believe it.
Some time later after joining the gang for the treasure hunt, he arrives and tries to capture the jungle boy, but is once again kicked in his crotch. After having Geoffrey captured, He reveals that he was never pleased about not making money during his service. Later he and the rogue soldiers ask Mowgli to take them to the treasure. He reluctantly agrees while indirectly telling them they won't make it.
That night, he and fellow soldier Wilkins are frightened by the noises of the animals. When Wilkins asks, he says in a rude tone he doesn't know. Later, Mowgli silences the animals by calling out to them. Soon they both hear Shere Kahn roar.
Death[]
The next morning, Harley wakes up to the sight of Mowgli escaping from his post. He chases the jungle boy but falls into some quicksand. Wilkins arrives and sees his fellow soldier in the murk. He begs him to save him and despite the efforts, he sinks completely, never to be seen again.
