In the Mortal Kombat franchise, Shao Kahn is the all-powerful emperor of the forsaken realm of Outworld. A seemingly immortal being with an unquenchable thirst for power, he forever seeks out new worlds to conquer and enslave. He has his sights set on dominating Earthrealm, but the Elder Gods created the Mortal Kombat tournament as a safeguard to protect the realms from his wrath. Kahn is unable to set foot in Earthrealm without first winning ten consecutive victories in Mortal Kombat, and so he commands the demon sorcerer Shang Tsung to secure him those victories that he might be able to enter Earthrealm as its conqueror. Over the course of 500 years, Outworld manages to win nine tournaments in a row, but during the tenth Shang Tsung is defeated by Earthrealm's new champion Liu Kang. Unwilling to wait another 500 years, Shao Kahn orchestrates a plan to invade Earth forcefully.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

Shao Kahn is portrayed by Brian Thompson in the second Mortal Kombat film. After Outworld loses Mortal Kombat, Kahn turns to his father - the dark Elder God Shinnok - to break the ancient codes of the tournament and allow him to invade. Shinnok ressurrects Kitana's mother and Kahn's former bride/queen Sindel on Earth, allowing Kahn to enter the realm to claim her. Kahn opens several portals to Earthrealm, allowing his armies to flood through and begin slaughtering the planet's people. As long as the portals remain open, Earthrealm slowly merges with Outworld and will be completely overwhelmed in six days.

When Shao Kahn invades Earthrealm, he confronts his brother Raiden and Earth's champions at the Temple of Light where he personally kills Johnny Cage. As the days pass, Kahn organises the abduction of his adoptive daughter Kitana and plants Jade amongst Raiden's forces as a spy. He arranges for the Earthrealm warriors to travel to Outworld in order to lure them into a trap and destroy them, but Jade fails her mission and Kahn has her executed.

At the end of the film, Shao Kahn and his three remaining lieutenants - Sindel, Motaro and Ermac - gather at a ruined temple for the final battle against Raiden and his warriors. Kahn kills Raiden with a magical attack and then he battles against Earthrealm's champion, Liu Kang. During their fight, Liu Kang transforms into a dragon, but Kahn counters this by transforming into a hydra. The two battle savagely, eventually turning back to their humanoid forms, and eventually Shao Kahn is defeated. Upon his death, the dragon tattoo on Kahn's back comes to life and rips out of the emperor's body before suddenly disappearing. With Kahn dead and Shinnok imprisoned by the Elder Gods, the merger between Outworld and Earthrealm is reversed and the Earth and its people are restored to normal.
