Sofia Falcone was a supporting character throughout most of the fourth season of Gotham. She was the daughter of the notorious criminal kingpin Carmine Falcone, though her father had kept her out of the family business for most of her life. After Gotham's criminal underworld had been dominated by the Penguin, Detective Jim Gordon sought out Falcone to help him with destroying the Pax Penguina. Carmine refused, but Sofia agreed, though she also harboured her own agenda, seeking both to take Gotham for herself and take revenge against Gordon for the death of her brother Mario.

History[]

Past[]

Sofia was born into the Falcone crime family as the only daughter of Carmine Falcone and the sister of Mario Falcone, later Calvi. While Sofia grew up, she did not experience much warmth from her father, who was busy leading his criminal empire. However, Sofia still managed to get a good look behind the machinery of Carmine's criminal network. When she was 13 years old, Carmine sent Sofia away from Gotham to prevent her from being corrupted by the city. Instead, Sofia tended to her father's businesses in the southern United States.

About 10 years later, Sofia learned that her brother Mario had been killed by Jim Gordon in Gotham City.

Return to Gotham[]

Years after Carmine has fled Gotham himself and had moved to Miami, he was visited by Jim Gordon. Gordon revealed to him that Oswald Cobblepot - The Penguin - had basically taken over the city and had created an era of crime which he called "Pax Penguina". Gordon wanted Carmine to return to Gotham, because under Carmine's rule the city was treated fairly - with Carmine being an honourable old-school gangster. However, Carmine revealed that he was dying and could not come back to Gotham again. Sofia (who had joined the two) claimed that she would head to Gotham in her father's stead, but Carmine forbid it, claiming that she was not ready for Gotham. Nevertheless, she installed herself as a power in her own right in Gotham, and began an on-off romance with Detective Gordon. She was instrumental in helping Gordon arrest the serial killer Professor Pyg, and pulled strings to make sure that Gordon was promoted to Captain of the GCPD, displacing his friend, Harvey Bullock.

Sofia and Cobblepot opened an orphanage together, and she befriended Cobblepot as part of a plan to take over his empire. However, he found out about her treachery with the help of one of the orphans, Martin, and declared war on her. She retaliated by kidnapping Martin, but Cobblepot faked the boy's death to keep him safe. Cobblepot went to Carmine and told him what Sofia had done, and Carmine reprimanded his daughter and ordered her to leave Gotham. Moments later, however, rival gangsters gunned Carmine down and wounded Sofia.

It was ultimately revealed that Sofia planned the hit, and that she had hired Professor Pyg as part of a plan to install Gordon as head of the GCPD and put both him and the police under her control. Gordon killed Pyg and tried to arrest Sofia, but she persuaded him that, if he put her in prison, she would reveal how he became Captain, and his career and everything that he had fought for would be undone. Later, when Cobblepot was arrested for Martin's supposed murder thanks to treacherous underling Victor Zsasz, Sofia was left as the uncontested ruler of Gotham's criminal underworld.

Defeat[]

As the new queen of Gotham, Sofia ordered Dr. Leslie Thompkins to give her 30% of the profits from the Narrows. Leslie refused and tried to negotiate to give her information on Gordon's crimes. Sofia refused and her men killed Lee's supporters with a planted gun, after which she broke Leslie's hand with a hammer and threw her on the street. Jim, who realized what had happened, vowed to defeat and stop Sofia. She was later shot in the head by Lee which put her in a coma, possibly permanently.
