Sylvester Pemberton (portrayed by Jim Shield) is a minor character who appears in Season 9 of Smallville. He is based on the Golden Age comic book superhero, the Star-Spangled Kid.

Early history[]
Little is known about Pemberton's early life. Back in the 1970's, he was a member of a group of heroes known as the Justice Society of America. While he had no special powers of his own, he was entrusted with a Cosmic Staff that granted him power over light and enhanced his strength and speed. He and the other members of the JSA disbanded after they were framed by a government agency.
Absolute Justice[]
At the beginning of this two-part episode, Pemberton tracks down Chloe Sullivan in a dark alley in order to enlist her help. Before he can go into detail, however, the temperature suddenly drops. Pemberton suddenly tosses Chloe into a nearby dumpster to protect her from what is coming.
From inside the dumpster, Chloe can only listen as the fight between Pemberton and his opponent, Icicle II, rages on. When the cold winds subside, she emerges to find Pemberton on the ground dying, with several bloody puncture wounds on his chest. As he died, Pemberton repeated the word "Check" to Chloe, though he was attempting to say "Checkmate", the name of the organization that had been hunting him.
