In Avengers: Infinity War, the alien warlord Thanos acquires the six Infinity Stones: powerful gems that each represent a fundamental aspect of the cosmos. Using all six Stones together, Thanos able to fulfill his goal of bringing balance to the universe by instantly wiping out half of all life with a snap of his fingers, causing those affected by the Stones' power to silently crumble away into dust and disappear. This event is known to the survivors as the Decimation and those who have been killed by the Snap are collectively refered to as The Vanished by the people of Earth.
However, in Avengers: Endgame, the surviving Avengers are able to devise a means of safely travelling back in time in order to obtain the Infinity Stones and undo the effects of the Snap. The way this works is that the past timelines that the Avengers travel to are actually alternate timelines accessed via the Quantum Realm, thus whatever they do in those timelines would have no effect on their present. As such, the heroes obtain the Stones from across time and the Hulk utilizes them in order to restore all the lives claimed in the Decimation. This event becomes known as The Blip on Earth as people who disappeared five years previously suddenly reappeared in the same locations where they had died and remained the same age they had been at the time of their death.
List of the Vanished[]
Thanos' Snap wiped out 50% of all life-forms across the entire universe, so it is impossible to document every single individual who was killed in the Decimation. Below is a list of noteworthy victims of the Snap, all of which were resurrected by the Hulk after the Avengers' Time Heist.
- Sam Wilson/The Falcon - Portrayed by Anthony Mackie. A former USAF paratrooper, he became a member of the Avengers after helping Captain America thwart the plans of HYDRA when the terrorist group emerged within S.H.I.E.L.D. He participated in the Battle of Sokovia, sided with Cap during the Avengers Civil War and fought in the Battle of Wakanda where he fell victim to the Snap in 2018. After being resurrected in 2023, he fought alongside the Avengers once again in the Battle of Earth.
- James "Bucky" Barnes/The Winter Soldier - Portrayed by Sebastian Stan. Bucky was the best friend of Steve Rogers prior to his becoming Captain America in the 1940's. They fought in World War II together, but Bucky seemingly lost his life during a mission in Austria after he fell from a train. He was recovered by the Soviet Union and underwent several brainwashing procedures, turning him into the world's most deadly puppet soldier. He was kept in cryogenic suspension between operations, hence his stunted ageing. In 2014, the Winter Soldier was utilized by HYDRA as they took over S.H.I.E.L.D. from within. The Soldier was defeated in battle against Captain America and supposedly perished, but would re-emerge years later, having begun to regain his memories. After having regained his memories in full, Bucky went into hiding in Wakanda until he was called back into action to fight against the Black Order. He fell victim to the Snap and disintegrated in front of Rogers. Following his resurrection, he took part in the Battle of Earth. After the battle, he was greeted by an elderly Steve Rogers who handed down to him the mantle of Captain America.
- T'Challa/Black Panther - Portrayed by Chadwick Boseman. T'Challa became the King of Wakanda following the death of his father and former king, T'Chaka, in 2016. His father's death was believed to have been caused by the Winter Soldier and T'Challa sought revenge, though it was later discovered that Helmut Zemo had been responsible for the bombing that had killed T'Chaka and for sparking the Avengers Civil War. After learning the truth, T'Challa granted Barnes amnesty in Wakanda. He soon after was crowned king, though the throne was contested by his exiled cousin Erik Killmonger. T'Challa survived Killmonger's challenge and thwarted his attempts to lead Wakanda down the path of world domination. In 2018, T'Challa succumbed to the Snap, leaving his bodyguard Okoye to rule Wakanda in his absence. Following the Blip, he led the armies of Wakanda into battle against Thanos' forces in the Battle of Earth.
- Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch - Portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen. Wanda and her brother Pietro were citizens of Sokovia who volunteered to be augmented into superhumans by HYDRA in order to take revenge on Tony Stark, whose weapons were involved in a bombing that killed their parents. After the Avengers shut down the HYDRA base where they had been experimented on, the twins fell in with the genocidal robot Ultron, unaware that the machine's plans involved the total annihilation of humanity. After learning the truth, Wanda and Pietro sided with the Avengers and helped them to destroy Ultron, though Pietro was killed during the battle. In 2016, Wanda joined the Avengers in confronting the terrorist Crossbones in Nigeria, but when Crossbones attempted to blow himself up, Wanda used her telekinesis to move him away. Sadly, Wanda could not contain the explosion indefinitely and released it in proximity to a building, inadvertantly killing twenty-six people. Due to her guilt over this incident, she sided with Iron Man over signing the Sokovia Accords and fought alongside him during the Avengers Civil War. After the Civil War, she and Vision fled to Scotland where they remained in hiding until the Black Order came to obtain the Mind Stone in Vision's head. She had participated in the Battle of Wakanda and succumbed to the Snap after failing to stop Thanos from taking the Mind Stone. When she was resurrected five years later, she attacked Thanos, intending to avenge Vision who had not been resurrected due to the circumstances behind his death.
- Groot - Voiced by Vin Diesel. A flora colossus from the planet X, Groot had gotten involved with the criminal Rocket Raccoon prior to 2014. During 2014, the duo escaped from the Kyln along with Peter Quill, Gamora and Drax the Destroyer. Together, these unlikely heroes saved the planet Xandar from destruction at the hands of Ronan the Accuser, becoming the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, during that battle, Groot was seemingly destroyed, though a small cutting of his body survived and Groot regrew from it, reaching a teenage stage of growth by 2018. After accompanying Thor to the forge of Nidavellir, Groot cut off one of his arms to form the handle of Stormbreaker, Thor's new axe. He, Rocket and Thor then travelled via the Bifrost to Earth while the Battle of Wakanda was taking place. Shortly after the battle, Groot fell victim to the Snap, disintegrating before Rocket's eyes. Five years later, he was resurrected and was transported by Dr. Strange to Avengers Headquarters where he took part in the Battle of Earth. Following the heroes' victory, the Guardians of the Galaxy were reunited and Groot left with them.
- Peter Quill/Star-Lord - Portrayed by Chris Pratt. Born from a union between a human woman and the Celestial known as Ego, Peter was abducted from Earth at a young age and raised by Yondu Udonta of the Ravagers. As an adult, he had left the Ravagers and established himself as a roguish space adventurer. After being arrested by the Nova Corps, he escaped from the Kyln along with a group of other prisoners who would band together to save the planet Xandar from Ronan the Accuser, becoming the Guardians of the Galaxy. In 2018, Star-Lord, Drax and Mantis joined forces with Iron Man, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange as they battled Thanos on Titan. Possessing four of the Infinity Stones by that point, Thanos could not be defeated and forced Doctor Strange to surrender the Time Stone before travelling to Earth to obtain the final Stone. Star-Lord disintegrated along with the other defeated heroes apart from Iron Man. He was resurrected in 2023 and transported to Earth by Dr. Strange where he took part in the final battle with Thanos' army. After the battle, the Guardians left for deep space with Thor joining the crew and throwing the leadership of the group into dispute.
- Drax the Destroyer - Portrayed by Dave Bautista. A member of the Kylosian race, Drax sought revenge against Ronan the Accuser after the rogue Kree murdered his wife and child. His rampage across the galaxy ended when he was arrested on Xandar during an altercation with Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Together, they would escape from prison and join forces to defeat Ronan, becoming the Guardians of the Galaxy. Drax joined Star-Lord and Mantis in confronting Thanos amidst the ruins of Titan in 2018 and fell victim to the Snap as they did. After the Snap was undone, he rejoined his fellow Guardians in the Battle of Earth before leaving to find the missing Gamora.
- Mantis - Portrayed by Pom Klementieff. A member of an empathic species, she was raised by Ego since childhood and used her powers to temper her master's neurotic behaviour. In 2017, she met the Guardians of the Galaxy and joined them after they destroyed Ego. In 2018, she travelled to Titan with Star-Lord and Drax where they fought against Thanos alongside the Avengers Iron Man, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. By scanning Thanos' mind, Mantis discovered that the Mad Titan had sacrificed Gamora to obtain the Soul Stone. She fell victim to the Snap along with her friends, but was resurrected in 2023 and rejoined the Guardians as they continued their adventures across the universe.
- Dr. Stephen Strange - Portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. A former neurosurgeon, Strange's medical career ended when a car accident resulted in his hands suffering permanent nerve damage. After western medicine failed to heal him, he travelled to Asia in search of less conventional forms of treatment. Arriving in Kamar-Taj, Strange met the Ancient One who introduced him to magic and alternate dimensions, teaching him about the Mystic Arts. Learning how to wield these awesome forces to great effect, the doctor was able to stop the sorcerer Kaecilius from breaching the Dark Dimension and prevented the demonic Dormammu from destroying Earth. In 2018, Strange fought alongside Iron Man and Spider-Man against Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian, but was captured. Though rescued by Iron Man and Spider-Man, the Q-Ship the heroes had boarded couldn't be stopped or diverted and they soon arrived on Titan. While awaiting the arrival of Thanos, Strange used the Eye of Agamotto to peer into millions of alternate timelines, seeing only one in which he and his allies defeated the Mad Titan. However, during the fight with Thanos, Iron Man was captured and Thanos threatened to kill him unless Strange surrendered the Time Stone. Despite stating previously that he would gladly sacrifice his allies to protect the Stone, Strange couldn't bring himself to live up to those words and surrendered the Stone to Thanos, thus sentencing half the universe, including himself, to death. In 2023, Strange was restored and used his ability to create inter-dimensional portals to summon all of the Avengers and their allies to Avengers Headquarters for the final battle against Thanos' army.
- Peter Parker/Spider-Man - Portrayed by Tom Holland. A highly intellectual teenage boy who attended New York's Midtown High School, Peter was bitten by a genetically augmented spider during a school field trip. The spider had grafted its own genetic code onto Peter, giving him abilities such as the proportional strength of a spider, wall-crawling abilities and a precognitive "spider-sense". With these powers, along with some self-made web shooters and a hi-tech suit provided by Tony Stark, Parker took on the mantle of the friendly, neighbourhood Spider-Man, fighting crime on the mean streets of New York City. In 2018, Parker witnessed the arrival of the Black Order in Greenwich Village and ditched his fellow school students to help Iron Man and Doctor Strange battle the invaders. When Strange was captured, Spider-Man and Iron Man followed him into space, freeing him from captivity but unable to pilot the vessel. Arriving on Titan, Spider-Man joined Strange, Iron Man, Star-Lord and Drax in battling Thanos, but they were ultimately unable to stop him. When the Decimation occurred, Spider-Man was the only one who seemed to suffer any kind of reaction. Whereas the Snap's other victims seemed to disintegrate quietly and painlessly, Parker complained of feeling sick before vanishing, possibly an effect of his spider-sense. Before crumbling to dust in Iron Man's arms, he cried and expressed his fear of death. In 2023, Spider-Man was resurrected and returned to Earth thanks to Dr. Strange. After Iron Man sacrificed himself using the Infinity Stones to destroy Thanos and his army, Parker found himself kneeling and weeping over Stark's body along with Pepper Potts.
- Maria Hill - Portrayed by Cobie Smulders. Hill was the former Assistant Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. before the HYDRA Uprising. Following S.H.I.E.L.D.'s collapse, she took on a position at Stark Industries to protect herself from prosecution. She was fired from Stark following the Avengers Civil War. When the Decimation occurred, she was convening with Nick Fury regarding the Black Order's presence on Earth as the disaster struck. As she and Fury witnessed citizens all around them suddenly disintegrating, the same happened to Maria too. When the Decimation was undone in 2023, Hill was among the attendees at Tony Stark's funeral.
- Nick Fury - Portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson. Fury was the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. before the organization's collapse in 2014. Since then, he had remained in hiding from both the law and HYDRA, but made it his business to keep tabs on the Avengers and many of his associates and enemies. When the Decimation occurred, Fury used a pager-like device to send a distress signal to Captain Marvel just before he disintegrated. Following the Blip in 2023, he attended the funeral of Tony Stark.
- Dr. Hank Pym - Portrayed by Michael Douglas. A brilliant scientist who discovered the Pym Particle and the inventor of the Ant-Man Suit. In 2018, he was reunited with his wife Janet Van Dyne after rescuing her from the Quantum Realm with the help of the current Ant-Man, Scott Lang. The reunion was short-lived, however, as while the Van Dynes were overseeing an experiment in which Lang was deployed into the Quantum Realm, Hank, Janet and their daughter Hope were all claimed by the Snap. They would be restored five years later and attended Tony Stark's funeral.
- Janet Van Dyne - Portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer. Wife of Hank Pym and the original Wasp. In 1987, she had managed to disarm an in-flight Soviet intercontinental missile, but had to shrink down to a sub-atomic state to do so and became lost in the Quantum Realm. She remained in the Quantum Realm until 2018 when she was rescued by Scott Lang and her daughter Hope. Shortly after her rescue, however, she, Hank and Hope fell victim to the Snap while Scott was traversing the Quantum Realm, leaving him stranded as a result. They would be restored five years later and attended Tony Stark's funeral.
- Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp - Portrayed by Evangeline Lilly. The daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, Hope became heavily involved with Pym Particle research after learning about her mother's disappearance. After the Avengers Civil War, Clint returned to his family under house arrest. On the day of the Snap, the Bartons were enjoying an outdoor barbecue and, while Clint's back was turned for a moment, his entire family had vanished without a trace. After learning what had happened, Clint spent the next few years until the Blip tracking and executing criminals who had survived the Snap under the codename Ronin.

Vision took Glaive out of the lab for Shuri's protection, but she would be claimed by the Snap a short time later. In 2023, she was resurrected and joined her brother and the Wakandan armies as they supported the Avengers in the Battle of Earth.
- Sif - Portrayed by Jaimie Alexander. She was an Asgardian warrior and an ally of Thor who also assisted S.H.I.E.L.D. from time to time. She was later banished from Asgard by Loki who, at the time, had assumed Odin's identity so he could rule Asgard and feared that Sif could expose him.
