Earthmover

Tony Maychek (voiced by Stephen Collins) was an antagonist in the animated series Batman Beyond. Appearing in the episode "Earth Mover", he was a metahuman who had merged with the earth itself and possessed powers of geokinesis, able to shape and shift the earth as he wished. He used this power to try and take revenge on his former boss who had left him to die during an accident.

History[]

In 2029, Tony Maychek worked with aspiring industrialist Bill Wallace. At the time, he was raising his daughter Jackie alone, having lost his wife some time prior. While Bill's company was in its infancy, they did not have the money or resources to properly dispose of the waste byproducts produced by their industry. As such, Bill resorted to burying his toxic waste in an abandoned mine shaft. One night, Tony was inside the shaft helping to guide the other workers lowering the barrels containing the waste, but the crane became snagged on a piece of debris and caused a minor cave-in. Tony was partially buried, but the waste barrel that was being lowered had ruptured and Tony was doused in its contents.

Believing Tony to have died, Bill had the shaft filled in and decided to adopt Tony's daughter Jackie, caring for her as his own child. However, Tony hadn't been killed; his DNA had been scrambled by the catalyzing properties of the waste chemicals. Over the next ten years, Tony's rotting corpse merged with the earth around him and he became able to shape and manipulate it in various ways. Believing that Bill had intentionally buried him alive in order to keep all of his company's profit for himself, Tony grew increasingly angry and vowed to take revenge.

In 2039, Tony began stalking his daughter Jackie, now a teenager. Unable to move himself, he conjured several drones out of the earth itself, watching Jackie through them. One night, a dirt monster was spotted and followed by Terry McGinnis, who had been studying with Dana Tan at Jackie's house. The following night, when Bill was showing the trio the location of his new factory, Tony shook the ground under their feet and ejected toxic waste containers from underneath. He also conjured another dirt monster that was repelled by Batman. Tony was momentarily foiled. Later that night, he went after Bill and Jackie in their house. He opened a hole in the ground, abducting Bill and then sunk the entire house with Jackie inside.

Death[]

When Jackie ventured out of the house, she found Tony's immobile body, surrounded by the chemical barrels that fed and sustained him. Disoriented and overwhelmed by pain, Tony accused Bill of stealing Jackie and premeditating the tragic accident, because he really didn't want a partner. Tony wanted Jackie to stay with him and tried to kill Bill by immersing him into the ground. Batman thwarted him by rupturing the toxic waste containers that nurtured him. Despite his defeat, the moribund cadaver built up enough energy to shatter a rock that blocked Jackie's escape route, allowing her to live on. Moments later, Tony succumbed, finally earning his peace.
