Walter Golic is a supporting character in the sci-fi horror film Alien 3. He is an inmate of the prison complex on Fiorina 161 and one of the more disturbed individuals among the populace. While everyone at the prison is guilty of violent crimes, Golic is looked down upon by his fellow prisoners because he is considerably less stable mentally and is resistant to chemical treatment. He is portrayed by Paul McGann.
History[]
Prior to his incarceration at Fiorina 161, Golic had committed dozens of violent crimes. He was responsible for several murders, dismemberments and acts of arson, leading to him being incarcerated at the Haverhill Asylum Facility. When Haverhill failed to cure Golic of his dementia, he was transferred to Fiorina 161 where he was to live out the rest of his days.
Golic was despised by most of Fiorina's inmates. While the other prisoners had received successful treatment for any mental disorders they had, Golic was seemingly immune to anti-psychotic medication. Leonard Dillon had encouraged Golic to embrace his religion along with the others, but the other prisoners still hated associating with Golic and always complained whenever they had to work with him.
In 2179, an escape pod carrying Ellen Ripley crash-landed on Fiorina. Not long after, a Xenomorph began running amok throughout the facility, killing any prisoners it came into contact with. Golic witnessed the creature kill two prisoners and panicked. He was brought to the infirmary where he was tied down to a bed, believed to be responsible for the killings in a fit of schizophrenic mania. Golic insisted he was innocent, telling the others of a "dragon". Ripley believed him and warned Superintendent Andrews of the danger the prisoners now faced.
Later on, Golic witnessed the Dragon kill the prison's medic Jonathan Clemens. However, he was spared along with Ripley. He is not seen again in the theatrical cut of the film, but it is believed to have been involved with the prisoners' plan to burn the alien out of the vents with quinitricetyline. That plan went terribly wrong and resulted in the deaths of several inmates, with Golic presumably among the casualties.
Assembly Cut[]
In Alien 3's special edition DVD release, Golic is revealed to still be restrained in the infirmary after the Dragon is trapped inside an empty nuclear waste tank. However, after Morse casually informed him of the Xenomorph's fate, Golic begged to be released, and eventually convinced Morse to untie his bonds. He promptly knocked Morse unconscious and, guided by a delusional belief that he should assist the Dragon, went to the waste tank where the creature was trapped. When he was denied access by Arthur, who had been placed on guard outside the door, Golic murdered him before opening the tank and asking the Xenomorph what it required of him next. The creature immediately killed him, before running free into the prison once more.
Golic's death was not shown on-screen before the Dragon is shown running out of the waste chamber. His death is confirmed when the other surviving prisoners find his mauled body inside the tank.
