Xavier Chavez was a supporting character in Saw II, serving as the film's tertiary antagonist. He was a drug dealer who had previously been sent to prison by Detective Eric Matthews, though it was for a crime that he hadn't commited. He would later become an unwitting player in one of John Kramer's murderous games.
History[]
Xavier was an aggressive and ruthless man who earned his living as a drug dealer. However, at one point in his life, he was innocently framed and arrested by Detective Eric Matthews, after the latter had faked the evidence in his case. He was then imprisoned in the Joliet Correctional Center until his release.
Due to his profession and connection to Matthews, Xavier was targeted by John Kramer, the Jigsaw Killer. Some time after his release from prison, he was abducted and then locked inside an old house along with seven other people. The house had not only been rigged with various puzzles and traps, but had been flooded with nerve gas which would kill the captives in a matter of hours unless they received an antidote. An audiotape message left by Jigsaw revealed that there were several antidotes located around the house, including one within a locked safe in the room that the captives all woke up in. Jigsaw left the group with a cryptic clue, stating that each of them had a part of the combination to the safe, the numbers being in "the back of their minds".
Throughout the captives' shared ordeal, Xavier was only out for himself, not wanting the others to slow him down. The only times he relied on others was when he forced the other captives to solve puzzles for him, such as when he made Gus Colyard examine the booby-trapped door leading out of the starting room and when he made Obi Tate crawl into a furnace to retrieve a syringe. These resulted in Gus and Obi's deaths, though Xavier's only concerns were getting the antidote and getting out, no matter who else got hurt in the process.
The surviving group members later found a room with a metal door that had a timer on it. A message in the room revealed that an antidote was behind the metal door, but the key to the door was hidden within a pit full of used syringes. Jigsaw had designed this trap specifically with Xavier in mind, but Xavier demanded that one of the others go into the pit to find the key. When the group refused, Xavier grabbed Amanda Young and callously threw her into the pit. She spent several agonizing seconds sifting through filthy syringes that pierced her skin, eventually finding the key to the metal door. Xavier grabbed the key and put it into the door, but was too little too late as he fumbled with the key and the timer ran down, resulting in the door locking permanently.
Remembering what Jigsaw had said about an antidote inside the safe, Xavier went back to the safe room. There, he examined Gus' body and noticed a number on the back of his neck, realizing what Jigsaw had meant by the numbers being in the back of their minds. Every one of the captives had a number on the back of their necks which, when put together, would make the combination for the safe. Determined to get the numbers, Xavier attacked and murdered Jonas Singer before checking his number. He then read the numbers on everyone else's necks before trying to hunt down Amanda and Daniel Matthews. Along the way, Xavier discovered a discarded photo that revealed that Daniel was the son of the very man who framed Xavier and sent him to prison, giving him even more reason for wanting to kill them.
Death[]
Xavier pursued Amanda and Daniel through a hidden passage that led out of the house and into an underground system of tunnels. He finally cornered the pair in an old bathroom where two corpses lay, both previous victims of Jigsaw. Daniel appeared to have succumbed to the nerve gas, but Amanda reminded Xavier that if he killed her, she wouldn't be able to tell him the number on the back of his neck. Left with no other choice, Xavier used his knife to cut off the skin on the back of his neck, which proved to be excrutiating. Despite the immense pain, Xavier managed to do it and saw that his number was 25. He then reached for Daniel's body, but the boy was playing possum. He suddenly sprung to life and slashed at Xavier with a hacksaw he had picked up off the floor, cutting the thug's throat open. Xavier fell to the floor and died choking on his own blood.
